Day School with the Friends of Shropshire Archive
Attended the Day school which started with a lecture by Geraldine King on the origins of the Wool trade and its importance to Shrewsbury
The next speaker Professor John Patrick explained the impact of Plague and Black Death on the population and the wool trade
After Coffee Bill Champion set out the rise of the Shrewsbury Drapers who became the dominant guild in Shrewsbury in the 16c and 17c
Then James Lawson archivist and past master outlined the down fall of the trade as communications improved and the industrial revolution created more competition.
After Lunch Nigel Baker, Bridget Hinton, Stan Sedman guided parties around Shrewsbury to see the Drapers legacy of timber framed buildings from the 16c and 17c. Nigel Hinton gave a virtual tour for the others.
The Clerk Mr Richard Auger gave a short address on the organisation of the Companies various activities and Brigadier Nigel Sturt spoke briefly about the Building Preservation Trust.
The afternoon was completed by an inspiring talk from Madge Moran on Drapers Hall and Stokesay Castle.
The chairman thanked all who contributed to the day and hoped everyone would enjoy their afternoon tea in Drapers Hall.

An excellent service and pre-prandial drinks in the magnificent chapel and hall. A superb meal with not only speeches but some excellent piano playing and singing from professionals ably assisted by the master Mr Nicholas Nightingale

An excellent performance of "Spem in Alium" by Thomas Tallis written around the time our Hall was being rebuilt in 1570s. There was other other early music under the baton of Mr David Leeke the invited choir sang beautifully and inspired us all

Set up for Textile Design Competition The team under Chair Julia Winter spent the day receiving entries and setting thenm up for judging. The outside team had put up signs and banners to advertise the exhibition.

Coalbrookdale Museum
Darby Houses Costume Museum and Clay Pipes
A very wet day.
Almost o/d on museums this weekend but in spite of the rain a large number of the Livery guild representatives met at Coalbrookdale for coffee at 11.00am.Visited the Darby houses and saw construction/consrvation work on going.
An insight into the way the Darby family lived then into the behind the scenes of the Costume Museum shared interest in the corsets they are making and donated a copy of Silhouette to the Museum.
Saw the Red Arrows in close formation going over the Gorge.
Then a light lunch renewing acquaintance with some Masters i had seen and talked to before.
After lunch the other Darby house and then visited the Pipe Works in Broseley an interesting time warp.
Saw a demonstration of clay pipe making but did not buy a pipe.

Chairman's Ball at Engineuity Ironbridge Gorge
Mike Lowe Chairman of Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust welcomed his, paying, guests to the Ball held in Engineuity.
The food tonight was excellent and the company was also very good.
The speeches were mercifully short and after the Chairman`s welcome the Lord Mayor of London, who had travelled over 6,000 miles to be there, gave an interesting and amusing speech.
The band were really very good and kept the floor full until midnight.

Livery Dinner at Ironbridge Gorge museums. The Clerk and I attended this annual event when Masters and wags from the London Guilds are invited to meet up at a Masters Weekend hosted by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust.
The evening was very jolly with some entertaining guests on our table the food was moderate and below the standard most of the guests would expect.
Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th agreed with Clerk the wording for the invitation to the Masters visit Ty Mawr on July 2nd, proceeds to H4H. Invitations will be posted on Friday by Sheila Phillips.

Textile Design Competition committee meeting.
Detailed planning meeting for logistics and setting up the exhibition on 17th September whilst the concert on 18th September is being rehearsed. With several volunteers available on Saturday 17th September exhibits will be hung as they arrive.

Drapers Hall Preservation Trust Annual General Meeting.
The formal business of the preservation trust election of trustees approval of accounts and receipt of the Chairman`s,Nigel Sturt`s report.
Many alterations to the Hall were reported the hotel business was underway and the new layout of the restaurant was reported to have helped. New oak doors had been fitted downstairs and the dais and tiles had been covered with carpet for protection.

Mayors Sunday
The Clerk and i attended the Mayors Service in St Chads having paraded form the Castle with the Freemen, Councillors, former Mayors and representatives of many of the organisations in the town. Met Bridget inside representing the Shrewsbury Town guides sitting in our usual spot.

Signed off accounts. I had a meeting with the accounts Draper Andrew Hazelwood and we checked the final accounts that were approve dthe the annual meeting and formally signed off the accounts.
Monday 9th May
Annual Meeting of the Company
The formal annual meeting when the formal business is done including inter alia; Accounts Approval Committee Reports Presented and plans for the future are discussed. Main issue discussed was the damage to the chimneys at Holy Cross.
Tuesday 3rd May
Met Mike Ashton to discuss publicity Flyers and Posters for September he came up with a pleasing design that was approved at the Textile Design Competition that followed at 6pm.

Visit to The Company of Merchant Taylors in the City of York. An excellent way to spend my birthday with some excellent company in a superb setting with wonderful food and wine. The Master was in good form and amongst the guests I sat near The Master Cutler from Sheffield.

Thanks to some hard work by the people behind the scenes including the clerk, Richard Auger, the menu and table planner, Louise Galliers, the wine steward, Jan Boyd and of course the staff of the restaurant the Charter night went well.
The wardens were resplendent in their new gowns and the speeches were as concise as is consistent with clarity.
It was good to see that Richard Raven was well enough to attend and Bill Freeman, one of the modern Company`s founders, was able to come from Wiltshire.
