Tucking in at Tuckers Hall
On April 24th, The Master and Senior Warden of the Shrewsbury Drapers Company attended a Livery Dinner at the historic Tuckers Hall in Exeter, hosted by the Master, Wardens, and Court Assistants of the Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers, and Shearmen ofExeter for an evening of fine dining, tradition, and camaraderie.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted at the door by the Beadle Mr. Davy Johnson, who provided an introduction to the hall’s rich history. Built in 1471, Tuckers Hall stands as a testament to Exeter’s thriving wool trade, originally established by the Guild of Weavers, Fullers, and Shearmen. The hall’s Gothic architecture, Heavitree stone façade, and oak-panelled upper chamber reflect centuries of craftsmanship and fellowship, making it a truly fitting venue for such a distinguished gathering.
Guests enjoyed an exquisite seven-course gourmet dinner, thoughtfully paired with fine wines, creating an indulgent and memorable dining experience.
The evening featured a speech by Mary Pugsley MBE, founder of Hair at the Academy. Mary has dedicated her career to supporting vulnerable young people and adults by offering vocational education and skills training in the hair and beauty industry. Her academy provides life-changing opportunities to individuals facing barriers such as homelessness, learning disabilities, and mental health challenges. With the support of the Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers, and Shearmen, she continues to transform lives through education and inclusivity, earning her an MBE for her outstanding contributions to disadvantaged communities.
The Master of Shrewsbury Drapers was invited to deliver a response and toast to the Incorporation on behalf of the guests. The speech reflected on deep admiration for the history and traditions upheld by the Incorporation and acknowledged the shared commitment to craftsmanship and philanthropy. Her toast was met with warm applause, further reinforcing the spirit of unity and fellowship that defined the gathering.
The evening at Tuckers Hall was a remarkable blend of heritage, fine dining, and meaningful conversation—an occasion that celebrated both tradition and the transformative power of education.
